Hello everyone! As you may know, a few weeks ago I headed off to Punta Cana in The Dominican Republic with my family and WOW, what a trip it was! I’ve already shared all my outfit details from the trip but I also wanted to do a seperate post to share more details about the trip itself – where we stayed, how we booked it, etc. While I was there, quite a lot of you had questions about the resort (especially those of you planning honeymoons) so hopefully this Punta Cana Travel Guide will answer everything for you. It honestly was a trip of a lifetime and one I just couldn’t recommend enough, so if you’re even slightly thinking about it, have a read of this and I think you may just be convinced.
Firstly, The Dominican Republic is somewhere I only really discovered when I moved to New York. It’s only about a 2-3 hour flight from NYC, so a lot of New Yorkers holiday there. After seeing a few of my favourite bloggers travel there, I knew I had to look into it as it looked absolutely stunning! The Dominican Republic is an island in the Caribbean, so as you can imagine, it’s a slice of heaven on earth. The part of the island we visited is called, Punta Cana, which is probably the most popular part to go to. I don’t know a lot about the rest of the island, but if it is anything like Punta Cana, I’m sure it is amazing.
As I mentioned in my last travel post, my family absolutely loves to travel. Ever since my sister & I were young, we’ve always gone on family holidays, trying to see as much of the world as we can together. We’ve promised to keep this annual trip going for as long as we can and after some research, we decided on Punta Cana for this year’s trip. Last year when we went to the South of France, we booked everything ourselves, but this time around, we decided to go through a travel agent. We got in touch with the team at Tropical Sky and after chatting through a few different resorts, they helped us to book our favourite which was Secrets Royal Beach Punta Cana. They organised all our flights – Dublin to Paris & then Paris to Punta Cana – our airport transfers and of course, all our hotel arrangements. It couldn’t have been easier really and I would definitely book a trip with them again. When travelling somewhere for the first time that you’re not overly familiar with, it’s always nice to have a little guidance. If you want the contact of the agent who booked everything for us, feel free to email me (email@example.com) or snapchat me (retroflame1) and I can send it onto you.
You’ll have seen from my Snapchats (retroflame1) and Instagrams (@retroflame) that the resort itself was absolute heaven. Spacious rooms, a huge pool, hammocks, a gym & outdoor spa area, 8+ restaurants, nightly entertainment, the nicest staff and of course, the most beautiful beach on our doorstep. Like many resorts in the Caribbean, you book the hotel on an all-inclusive basis, which means unlimited everything ALL the time. Everything is paid for upfront when you book (per person) which means you don’t spend a penny while you’re there. We hadn’t been on an all-inclusive holiday in quite a while, but this year we really wanted to try it out again and we absolutely loved it. It cuts out all the stress and is such a treat for the week. I mean, who doesn’t want a week of unlimited mojitos? :)
Each morning, we went for breakfast at the buffet restaurant, The Riviera, which was so lovely & relaxed and then we moved around for lunch & dinner each evening. The good thing about Secrets is that as well as being able to avail of the restaurants on the resort, you also have access to 6/7 more restaurants at the Now Larimar Resort which is right next door. So you really do have a lot of choice! Our favourite for dinner was definitely the french restaurant, Mercure. Stunning decor and the food was delicious.
We tried our best to make it to the gym a few of the mornings and they also had pilates & zumba classes each day too which I loved. On our last full day, we treated ourselves to a spa day (which you do pay extra for but it’s SO worth it) and I think this definitely could have been one of the highlights of the trip. Absolute heaven! When you book a treatment, you also get access to the outdoor pool area where they literally treated us like queens for a few hours. I would genuinely go back just to do this again. Amazing!
We split our time between the beach and the pool as both were equally as stunning. There are bars at both (+ a swim up bar at the pool) and I think my favourite drink was the ‘Bahama Mama’. SO good! There’s also an option to rent out the really fancy cabanas at the beach, so if you feel like really treating yourself, I would definitely recommend this. My favourite time of each day was sunset at the beach. As I more or less have to avoid the sun, due to my pale skin (#redheadstruggle), I loved this time of day as I was able to walk around knowing I wouldn’t get burnt. It takes a lot for me to fully switch off, but I can honestly say this resort & destination made it very easy. I felt so relaxed after our week there.
While we were there, I tried my best to VLOG as much as I could as I absolutely love having these travel videos to look back on…& I’m really excited to show you the end result. The blog post is obviously a more detailed recap, but the VLOG shows some really fun snippets from our week. You can watch it HERE or just click play below:
Overall, it was a week to remember for sure and I hope to go back again in the future. There’s nothing better than discovering new places & I always love sharing everything with you too. If you do make the trip there at any stage or if you’re planning to, be sure to let me know on snapchat (@retroflame1) and I can, of course, answer any other questions you may have too.
Oh and if you fancy checking out some more of my travel snaps, be sure to follow along on Instagram (@retroflame) this week as I’ve just landed in….VEGAS!! So excited for the next few days here!
