My 12 Highlights from 2012

Happy New Year everyone! It’s so hard to believe that it’s this time of year again -feels like two seconds ago I was writing last years post. Undoubtedly, it was a whopper of a year for me & my blog and looking back at all my blog posts from the year, it’s going to be a hard one to top! From events to photo shoots to London to New York to Whitney Port….SO much can happen in one short year! To celebrate this manic but amazing year, I’ve compiled a little post with my 12 favourite experiences from 2012…

1. Kerry Fashion Weekend Vintage Salon Show

I organized a vintage fashion showcase as part of Kerry Fashion Weekend 2012, where 5 amazing stores took part. I adore vintage & always will, so this event was my ideal project. It was my first time ever taking charge of an event and it allowed me to find a new little love of mine -event management. I’m already looking forward to this year’s show!

2. Interning with Natalie B Coleman

In February, I had the most amazing opportunity of interning with well-known Irish Designer, Natalie B Coleman. I was sitting in the library in college back in February and randomly decided to email Natalie, to see if she needed an intern at any stage throughout the year. She emailed back & I started the following week. I assisted with her preparations for New York & Paris fashion weeks and looking back, I feel that this is where it all started for me! Natalie then introduced me to Shannon, the owner of Foundfuture, the Fashion PR & Sales agency I interned with in NYC and I guess the rest is history. Lesson no.1 from 2012 -always put yourself out there & always always chance your arm!

3. Turning 21

I had always wondered how I would spend my 21st birthday, but spending the day interning with Whitney Port at New York Fashion Week had never exactly seemed like one of the options! Alas, it happened & it’s a birthday that I will NEVER forget. When I came home to Ireland, I also celebrated with some close friends and family -lots of cocktails, cupcakes and great company, I couldn’t’ have asked for any more!

4. StealMyStyle

2012 allowed me to accomplish many of my goals, but my favourite? Finally getting the chance to set up a rail sale event, along with fellow blogger, Nessa Cotter. People find it kind of funny when I tell them that I had never even meet Nessa before we started to organize this event! We got in touch through our blogs, knew we would work well together & just went for it. Blogging really has allowed me to meet so many new people and I couldn’t’ have asked for a more like-minded person to undertake this venture with. Nessa & I have several exciting plans for 2013 & you can keep up to date HERE.

5. The growth of my social media sites

I can’t even begin to explain how grateful I am for all the support I get on my FacebookTwitter, etc. When I started my blog, I never even realised how linked it would be to these social media sites & often, it’s the kind words I receive on these sites which keep me and this blog going. Thank you again for following!

6. Collaboration

I recently just ended my ‘fashion year’ with a very exciting and encouraging collaboration with the hugely popular online store, The end result will be published in Jan/Feb & I cannot wait to show you!

7. Fashion Styling Projects

Throughout 2012, I got the opportunity to work with some amazing photographers, models, hair-stylists, makeup-artists, etc. which made my styling portfolio that little bit bulkier. I also got the chance, during the Summer, to assist a stylist from the New York Times Magazine, which allowed me to gain an insight into the styling world in NYC -something I want to see a lot more of. I’m looking forward to many more collaborations in 2013!

8. Press & Features

2012 was the year that Retro Flame started to get noticed by magazines, newspapers, websites, blogs & radio and I am genuinely over the moon & beyond grateful for all the support. I was named as one of Ireland’s “Bright Young Things” in Social & Personal Magazine, spoke on a Radio Station about my experience in NYC, was spotted on the streets of NYC by and had features in Stellar, The Sunday Times Style Magazine, The Irish Examiner, LOOK Magazine, Seventeen, The Sunday World, Xpose Magazine, Galway Now, Image and Company. The features are such a great support for this blog and hopefully there’ll be some more exciting ones in 2013.

9. Retro Flame Online Store

I also got around to setting up my very own online store, in conjunction with this blog. The first items that I’ve added are Studded iPhone covers which my sister & I now make. There’s been a great response so far & I’m really excited to add many more products in 2013.

10.  Personal Style Posts

Outfit posts have always been my favorite aspect of the blog and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed sharing more with you throughout the year. It’s funny how much your style can change even in a year. I’m not going to lie, looking back today I’m questioning some of my choices at certain points! But that’s fashion, hey! Always & ever changing. I hope I’ve provided a little inspiration and I can’t wait to try out all the new trends in 2013.

11. Summer in NYC

Where do I start….I can really only describe it as a Summer of a lifetime. In the last few days especially, I’ve been remembering little things that happened there & I still find it all so hard to believe! It’s honestly a city like no other and it provided me with the most amazing memories….my internship with Found Future, The people I met, New York Fashion Week, My Sunday’s off with Tommy, Brooklyn Bridge, Soho, The Highline, The vintage stores & markets, Starbucks, The Irish Bar I worked in, The sophisticated style, Long Beach -I could go on forever! Hopefully I will be back there again very soon <3

12. The internship with Whitney Port

…..& last, but certainly not least -my internship experience with none other than Whitney Port at New York Fashion Week. All I can say is, if I get an experience half as amazing as this in 2013, I’ll be happy. From running around New York, to working backstage at her show & studio, it was an opportunity of a lifetime and one that I won’t be forgetting for a long long time!

So there you have it, my recap on a wonderful year. I think it’s very important to always look back on the year just gone because along with the bad things that may have happened, so many brilliant things also occurred! Again, I’d like to thank every one of you who read this blog, follow me on twitter, like my Facebook page, comment on my Instagram pictures and those of you who have made the effort to come up and say hi in person. I finish college this May, so I’m really looking forward to seeing where I will be this time next year & I really hope that you’ll stick around for the journey! Here are a few little quotes that I’ll be living by in 2013….
Have a great night tonight & be sure to ring in the new year fashionably.

Stylishly yours,

Erika x

hey there Erika! Just stumbled across your blog! Lovely stuff. I’m an architecture student almost at the end of my never-ending degree and am unsure if I ever actually want to be one! I was hoping to get a fashion orientated internship this summer to help me make my mind up about what to do when I’m finished… I was hoping you could tell me how went about organising your various internships? Did you just email people? Did you have a CV done specially tailored for internships? Would love some advice if you have a spare minute!
