So I’ve been living here in New York for over 2 years now and I’m pretty sure this is my first ever proper snow post!? I’ve been through quite a few snow days since I moved here but had never made the most of one to do a proper shoot. So when my photographer friend, Kevin, text me super last minute to see if I wanted to go take some pictures in the snow – I JUMPED at the opportunity. I changed around my plans, put on the quickest face of makeup ever, curled my hair and reached for my favourite classic pieces. The thing about New York is that it teaches you to NEVER say no to a good opportunity.
I jumped in a cab and headed to The Central Park Conservatory Garden. As soon as I realized where I actually was, I remembered that the last time I was there was for a shoot with Teen Vogue – another occasion where I had to change around my plans. It was my second Summer interning in NYC and at the very end, I got an email from Teen Vogue asking if I would be free to do a shoot with them. It was a bit crazy at the time, as I was stone cold broke after a Summer of interning, but I borrowed some money and changed my flight so I would be able to stay in NYC a few days extra to do the shoot. I know a good opportunity when I see one and I just couldn’t say no. I have a lot to thank New York for and this particular trait it has given me is definitely top of the list. Everything you do here leads onto something else (always!), so you always have to be willing to adapt & just go for it!
I can’t get over how stunning all the shots turned out? I met Kevin recently at a networking event and I was so excited to shoot together. He seriously gets it & I absolutely love his work!! We basically had the whole gardens to ourselves to shoot and I couldn’t be happier with the results. There really is something magical about NYC in the snow. Definitely photos I will look back and smile at in years to come!
If you follow me on Snapchat (@retroflame1) or Instagram (@retroflame), you probably are more or less up to date on everything I’ve been up to, but I wanted to have a quick little chat here on the blog too. That’s why I’ll never stop loving blogging – it’s still my favourite way to have an actual ‘chat’ with all of you…if that makes any sense, haha! Yes, I love going on Snapchat, Insta Stories or Youtube and chatting, but nothing will ever beat the blog for me.
So anyway, what have I been up to? I won’t lie, things have been busy but that’s always a good thing in my eyes. I thrive off being busy and although there are days where I convince myself I didn’t get enough done, I trust that even the smallest bit of progress is good. I’ve been really focused on creating as many blog posts & videos for you as I can and I’m absolutely loving it. Just incase you mightn’t know, there are new blog posts here every Monday, Wednesday & Friday and then two new videos a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I have to say, as time is going on, I’m growing to love Youtube more & more! There are days I nearly cry with frustration trying to get everything right (ask Kaelin, haha!) but I’m getting there slowly but surely. I’m just trying to have as much fun as possible with it, while still always adding value for you guys. This week, Kaelin & I filmed two videos together – I did her makeup over on her channel (you’ll definitely get a LOL) and she did my hair on my channel. Feel free to have a watch and definitely let me know what other kind of videos you would like to see. I’m totally open to ideas and just want to keep improving all the time!
Other than work, life is good. Even though there is always something to be doing, I’m still squeezing in loads of time for my favourite people here in NYC – which is most important of all. I’m getting SO much better at taking actual time off at the weekends and I think 2017 might be the year I actually find a half-decent ‘balance’. At the end of the day, life is short and we need to make sure our priorities are right. I’m also gearing up for quite a busy month of travel in April. I’ve kind of been saving myself and focusing on work for the first part of the year, but travel season is definitely about to kick off for me soon. I can’t fight that travel bug any longer, haha! First up is Coachella and then right after that, I have another trip which I can’t wait to share more details on too. Time is absolutely flying this year but I always think that’s a good sign!
Anyway, that’s all I have for today. Just wanted to give you a quick update on everything & share these photos. As always, thank you so much for reading :) Tomorrow night, I’m ticking something off ‘my NYC list’ – I’m finally going to a Knicks basketball games here in New York with my friend, Niamh. I’m SO excited!! Be sure to keep an eye out for loads of snaps (@retroflame1) and Instagrams (@retroflame).
Hope you’ve all had a lovely Wednesday!
