My Go-To Homeware Stores

Processed with VSCO with 10 preset

Happy Sunday everyone! Hope you’ve all had a great week – mine absolutely flew! As you know, I’m in the midst of decorating my apartment while still trying to keep on top of work, so it’s been a busy one for sure! But we’ve made so much progress this week so I’m really happy that things are finally starting to come together. To be honest, I just know it’s not going to be fully finished & decorated for another month or two at least, but I’m working hard to just get all the main furniture & pieces in place so it’s starts to feel more like a home. The final decorating and DIY bits can come after. I’m all about the small details  so I know this will be an on-going project. But it’s definitely an exciting one to be working on!

But anyway, the main focus of today’s post to share the homeware stores I couldn’t have lived without during this move. I have such a huge love for interiors and it’s something I really enjoy doing, but even with a huge passion for it, it’s often so so hard to find what you’re looking for and more importantly to even know where to start looking. When I moved to NYC 2 years ago, I genuinely did not know where to start. But over the last two years, I’ve found some great stores both here in the city and also online, so I wanted to share them with you too. I love a good bargain and I ALWAYS shop around, so I definitely have a good idea where to go after this past week. I’ve been sharing lots of the new stuff I’ve bought over on Snapchat this week ( are you following along? My username is ‘retroflame1’) but I promised I’d share more here on the blog and also share some links. So below are my holy grail g0-to homeware stores and links to some of the items I’ve been showing you:

1.Home Depot
Great for all the small bits & pieces you need when you first move into a new place. The main things we’ve picked up here are shelves (such good value), bathroom accessories, rugs, storage units and anything we needed for painting or DIY’ing. It’s kind of like New York’s handy-store. The one I’ve been going to (I’ve been there at least 4 times in the last week) is on 59th and 3rd and I definitely recommend it. The staff are really helpful!

2.Cb2
This store is right next to Home Depot here in NYC and it is DEFINITELY one of my favourites. Every single time I walk in there, I want everything. Absolutely everything. I love their stores in New York but their online site is also absolutely brilliant and ships internationally. So far the items I’ve got from here are: The Odyssey Dining Table, this amazing marble shelf for my kitchen, a gold floor lamp and a few of these plants. There is SO much more I want, but seeing as it’s a little bit more on the expensive side, I just went to this store for more statement, unique pieces and I absolutely love everything so far. Probably one the home stores that’s most in line with my style!

3. Home Goods
As I mentioned, I LOVE a good bargain and there is no better place to find one than in Home Goods. Wow! Basically it’s a whole store of the home section in TK Maxx back home in Ireland and I was literally smiling from ear to ear the whole time I was in there. Yes, I know that is sad but if you know me well enough by now, you’ll know that I seriously love interiors and get far too excited about finding good stuff. So yes it’s a bit sad, but that’s just the way it is. Retro loves a good interiors find, haha! I got SO much in the Upper West Side store here in NYC. Unfortunatley, I won’t be able to link anything here but whether you’re in Ireland or here in New York, promise me you’ll give this store a shot. I know some people hate rummaging through disorganised shelves, but I can’t even explain the things you will find. Everything from candles to kitchen accessories to door knobs (which make SUCH a difference to cheaper furniture) to slipper poufs. Yes, slipper poufs – they’re a thing. My snapchat followers will know all about this, haha! I’ll definitely be back for another look in this store before the end of the month.

4. Target
Another great store for finding interior gems is Target. You can shop online or go in-store (I’ve done both this week and much prefer online) and found one of my favourite finds of this whole redecoration process – a marble & gold coffee table for under $200. This same kind of coffee table is triple the price everywhere else! I also found this lovely floor lamp and have my eye on this gold one too for my office. Oh and last but not least, this stunning marble & gold serving tray for just $19.99! I have a feeling I’ll be ordering a few more bits over the next few weeks. Their delivery is really fast and much cheaper than other online stores!

5. The Container Store
Next up is The Container Store – a store I’ve discovered since moving to NY. I went there to get all my kitchen storage and went with ones like these.  In my last apartment, I literally had no space to do any nice storage ideas in the kitchen, so I really wanted to do it right this time. Some of you will definitely think I’m crazy when I show you the end result, but it’s so nice to have everything organised. I feel like a proper grown-up, haha! I’ll have seperate ones for all my breakfast seed (chia, flax, etc.) and then I bought larger ones for pasta, rice & quinoa. I’m going to get cute hang tags for the front of each one and I’ll do a seperate post showing the end result! While I was there, I also found two of these white chairs  (going to spray the legs gold) for my little dining area in the living room and also this rose gold bin for my kitchen. Definitely worth a trip here when you’re moving1

6. West Elm
West Elm is just the DREAM! If I had an endless budget for my apartment, this is where I would aim to get everything, but seeing as that’s not the case this time, I’ve had to limit myself to just getting one or two statement pieces from here. My big splurge from here was this blush pink velvet chair for my living room. I am IN LOVE! It actually doesn’t arrive for another few weeks but I know it’ll be the perfect finishing touch to the room. Oh and how cute are these plates Lorna got me for my birthday? They’ll be so perfect on my bar cart.

7. Raymour & Flanigan
You’ll have seen me talk lots about Raymour & Flanigan over on my Snapchat (retroflame1) before as this is where I went to get my couch and bed. I’m going to wait to show you everything I got from this store in a seperate post and I just know you are going to love them!! I’m still waiting on my bed frame and I’m also getting really cool office chairs from here, so keep an eye out over the next fee weeks. 110% my go-to store in NY for all the bigger apartment furniture.

8. Joss & Main
Joss & Main is another new one I recently discovered and I’m so happy I did! The have really nice pieces are really reasonable price-points and so far I’ve order 5 things from their website. They have such a great selection of almost everything you need! The first piece arrived yesterday (you’ll have seen on my snap) and I’m still in awe. It’s this gold shelving unit which turned out to be even nicer in person! It works absolutely perfectly in my living room and I can’t wait to style up the shelves. I’m also waiting on this rose gold cart for my kitchen coffee area, this kitchen island which I’ll be using for storage and a food prep area and this stunning white bench for my bedroom. Really happy with my finds here!

9. Bed, Bath & Beyond
This is another great go-to here in NYC. It’s where I got my bedding, curtain rails and kitchen plates/sets. It can be a little pricy but good for getting the basics you know you’ll use loads!

10. Overstock
To me, Overstock is like Home Goods online. It’s a website you have to absolutely rummage through but if you have enough patience, you will find the BEST stuff! Last year, I found this amazing floor length mirror I used to have in my bedroom and it now works perfectly in my new office area. I’m also getting my office desks from here (I already have one) – not the fanciest in the world but exactly what I need for the moment. Oh and the best purchase of all? This silver & rose gold saucepan set for $40!!  As far as I know, they ship internationally, so definitely have a look on this site if you have time!

10. Wayfair
Wayfair is another one that is actually quite similar to Overstock. They have a lot of the same things but sometimes the prices can vary – so it’s good to shop around on each.

11. Amazon
And finally…I saved one of my favourites until last, Amazon. Honestly, this website is a life-saver! I have Amazon prime, so shipping is super quick (which is great for impatient people like me) and it’s a site that literally has everything you need. Often even things that are sold out on other websites. Yesterday, the console for my entry-way arrived from here and I absolutely love it. Less than $90, but with some added gold handles that I got in Home Goods, it now honestly looks double the price! A lot of you were also asking about how I DIY’d the marble counters in the kitchen and the VERY simple trick is this exact marble contact paper for less than $9!! Full tutorial to come on this soon! Other things I’ve found are these great-quality sheepskin rugs (way better than the IKEA ones), gold spray paint and this copper colander. SO many good finds!

12. Others
I also got a few things from IKEA (Pax mirrored wardrobe & Billy Bookcase) and I have my eye on lots of things from Etsy – I just have to find some time to sit down and order them. Thirft and Charity stores can also definitely surprise you from time to time and if you’re here in New York, you can find a lot of gems on Craigslist too.

img_4512When decorating a new place, I’ve learned that it takes A LOT of time and also a lot of trial and error. When I moved, somebody told me it would take me at least 2 months to have the place feeling like a home and I now 110% agree. It’s great to get the basics in first, but adding in all the finishing touches is something I definitely don’t want to rush. I know you’re all excited to see the end result too, but it will probably be another few weeks before I do my video tour. I just know it will take me until then to be full happy with the place.

To be honest, I still can’t believe this apartment is mine! I cannot believe how lucky I got. It’s been SUCH an amazing help to have my Mom here helping me move. She honestly is superwoman and is an absolutely genius when it comes to all things interior. I guess I had to get my interest from somewhere! Although, I won’t be doing a full tour for another while, I’m going to still be showing you so much in between. Personally, I think showing the actual process is even more exciting! Tomorrow, I’m filming another #retroflameHomeNYC Youtube video which will go live on Tuesday and I’m also going to be shooting lots of tutorials and DIY videos too. I love taking you along the journey with me and I’m so happy to hear that I’ve given you some ideas already. In a way, I can’t wait to have it all finished but in another way, I also don’t want this decorating to end. I’ve waited SO long to have an apartment that I truly love and I just want to enjoy every minute of making it a home.

Thanks so much for following along the #retroflameHomeNYC journey so far and I really hope you’ve found this post helpful. I’ll be sharing lots more this week on my Instagram (@retroflame) and Snapchat (retroflame1) so be sure to follow along!

Have a lovely Sunday,
Erika x
