With all my recent travels, I had actually nearly forgotten about this outfit that I shot with the lovely Brid while I was back home in Ireland a few weeks ago. I’ve been sharing loads of new wardrobe additions over on my Instagram (@retroflame) and Snapchat (retroflame1), but I still love to show you proper photos of everything here on the blog too. So I’m excited to be back with an new outfit post! Today’s post is actually going to be mainly focused on looking back on the goals I (and hopefully some of you too) set at the beginning of the year and taking a step back to figure out what’s left to do and how we’re going to do it. But first, I wanted to share these outfit details because when I wore this look, you guys had questions!
The black jeans are one of my latest investment purchases (i.e. something which costs a little more than I would usually spend, but something I know I will have forever) and these ones are from a jean brand I love, Rag & Bone. Is it bad that I can’t wait for it to be cold again in New York so I can literally wear these every day? SO comfortable and such a good fit! The white ruffle sleeved top is from Princess Polly, the waistcoat is an old purchase from The Outnet (I found a similar one here), the black heels are from River Island and the watch is from a new brand I’ve recently found called BERING. If you know me pretty well, you’ll know that my two favourite accessories are sunglasses & watches. I don’t love earrings, I don’t really like necklaces, I sometimes wear rings…but I ALWAYS wear a watch and have sunglasses at the ready. I tend to stick to the same type of gold watches, but when I spotted this rose gold & white one from BERING, I knew it would be nice for a change. It’s still about 1 link too big for me (I always have to get loads taken off) so as soon as I got back to New York, I dropped it into the jewellers and I’m so excited to get lots of wear out of it over the next few weeks. I’m very fussy when it comes to watches but I really like this one so far.
So as mentioned, I really wanted to use this post as an opportunity to go back and have a quick chat about a post I did in January called, “My Dream 2016“. I mentioned on my snapchat (retroflame1) yesterday that over the past few years, I’ve been guilty of making a big list of goals at the beginning of year and then totally ignoring this same list until New Years Eve rolls around. I look at the list at the end of the year, pick out all the things I didn’t get done and then add them to my new list for the year ahead. What does this end up being? A VICIOUS CYCLE. And I’m pretty sure I’m not alone on this one! Goals are all well and good and are definitely something I have a great deal of time for, but if we don’t put the correct planning and discipline behind them – they are pretty much useless. So today is July 13th, we are more than halfway through the year and I’ve decided to change things up a little this year. I spent yesterday evening sitting down, reevaluating my list of goals and making solid plans to get shit done. We still have 6 whole months left and I’m determined to make the most of them. And I want you to too.
Looking back on my list of goals, I definitely feel pretty happy so far. I mean, I still have a long way to go but this reevaluation will give me the second wind I need to really focus on the rest. As I said in the original post, my main goal for 2016 was to travel and this has been something I’ve really stuck to. I’ve been so lucky so far this year and although I doubt I’ll get absolutely everything on my list ticked off, I know I’ll still be very happy with the final outcome. I’m actually going to be ticking another (very exciting) place off the list this time next week, so I can’t wait to tell you all about that too. After travel, the next main section on my list was work. Work will always and ever be a priority to me and I’m so happy to have already ticked a few goals off this part of the list. I’m kind of pleasantly surprised to be honest which is the best thing about making these lists. You’re so happy when you realise how far you’ve actually come! I’ve managed to work on a site redesign which I absolutely love, I’ve introduced a few new categories and avenues to my content and although I can’t say absolutely anything yet, there may just be some Retro Flame products coming your way sooner than you (and I) thought. So much more to come on this but let’s just say the second part of my 2016 will have a very strong work focus – something which excites more than I ever thought possible. Then finally, in relation to the ‘New York Life’ goals on my list, let’s just say I really need to get working on these. I’m currently in the middle of apartment-hunting hell which, I’m not going to lie, is straining my love for this city a little but I know once I get that out of the way (and tick it off the list by September) I’ll be back to my NYC-obsessed self before I know it. As I mentioned on my snap…New York is kind of like that guy who seriously pisses you off from time to time, but ALWAYS ALWAYS finds a way to win you back. Always. So yes, I’m excited for the next 6 months here in crazy, but very fun NYC.
And now it’s your turn! I’m serious. If you joined me in making a list of goals back in January, I want you to take 5 minutes today (literally just 5 minutes) to take a look back on the list and get planning. If you’ve already ticked everything off – go you! But if not, it’s time to start getting shit done. Or else it will just be another one of ‘those years’ that didn’t go exactly to plan..and we DO NOT want that. Life is too frickin short to keep putting things off. So here’s the plan:
1. Look at your list and pick out the easiest of all your goals – the one that will take the least time and effort. Then make a plan right this minute about how you’re going to achieve this goal in the next week. You have a whole week to do it and then that’s one thing off your list. Done.
2. Now look at the rest of your goals and be very honest with yourself. Which ones do you truly believe you can conquer this year? Write those ones on a seperate list and make SOLID plans to get working on them. Write down a deadline & a plan of action for each. When you break things down into smaller steps, I promise it makes everything less daunting – so do that for each one and you’ll be surprised at how much more ready you feel.
3. Finally – please please please remind yourself that you only have ONE life. One single chance at doing everything you want to do. There will always be obstacles and reasons to put things off, but just imagine how happy and grateful you’ll feel when you do those things you’ve always wanted to do. So if it means getting up an hour earlier every day, getting an second job to save more money or just moving a little outside your comfort zone – promise me that you’re about to do everything in your power to make the absolute best of these next 6 months. It always seems impossible until it’s done….and I know we can do it!
I really do hope you liked this post & found it helpful. Be sure to let me know your thoughts on snapchat. My username is retroflame1.
Have a great Wednesday,
